Many visitors to Pulaski County are happy to spend their days enjoying the various recreational assets of Lake Cumberland while others may prefer to explore the area and visit other nearby attractions. Below are a few suggested itineraries, some are within Pulaski County while several are located in adjoining counties:

Just north of Somerset on US 27 you can experience a day of fun-filled water adventures at SomerSplash, Somerset’s new water park or you can head south on US 27 to Somerset Falls Family Park for a round of Miniature Golf. Another fun stop down 27 would be Skaters Choice of Kentucky which features an arcade & roller skating.

For those interested in Agri-tourism venture out East of Somerset to Cedar Creek Vineyards or Sinking Valley Winery for a tour and a tasting of the wine varieties they make. Head West on US 80 for a trip to Haney’s Appledale Farm in Nancy where you can pick your own apples in season and treat yourself to a delicious fried apple pie. Also in the Nancy area take the kids to Bear Wallow Farm for their Autumnfest, Sept. 15 – Oct; children love the corn maze and pumpkin chunkin’ machine.

A popular excursion for Lake Cumberland visitors is a trip to Wolf Creek Dam and the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery in nearby Jamestown, KY. You can tour The Fish Hatchery and take a fun & engaging educational journey through the new Visitor Center.

ARTS & CULTURE
Art enthusiasts should start your tour in downtown Somerset by checking out the art exhibits & special events at The Carnegie Community Arts Center.  The Carnegie is also home to local art organizations such as the Sheltowee Artisans & The Escape Artists plus several other area artists.  The Center for Rural Development features a variety of cultural events including exhibits, concerts and The Lake Cumberland Performing Arts Series productions. Seasonal dramas are also presented at the Somerset Community College Theatre.

Country Music fans will appreciate a trip to Renfro Valley, Kentucky’s Country Music Capital and home of the world famous Barn Dance Show. While in that area head on up to Berea, The Folk Arts & Crafts Capital of Kentucky. Downtown Berea is full of arts & crafts shops. You can spend hours in the new Kentucky Artisan Center & Café at Berea.

OUTDOOR RECREATION
Visit our City & County Parks for numerous outdoor recreation possibilities. Also try one of our local Recreation Areas such as Fishing Creek & Waitsboro for camping and picnic sites.

Pulaski County Park offers a 3 mile hiking trail plus a Physical Fitness/Nature Trail and disc golf. The Corps of Engineers Visitor Center features a short boardwalk trail & Somerset Community College also has a nature trail.

Downtown Somerset is the place to be on the 4th Saturday of each month, Apr. – Oct. for the Somernites Cruise Car Show, our most popular outdoor event. The weekend also includes other events associated with the Cruise such as the Walmart Block Party.

Travel south on US 27, then east on KY 90 to Cumberland Falls State Park, located in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Known as the “Niagara of the South”, this picturesque falls is well worth the trip but there are also hiking trails, horseback riding & a variety of other activities available in the area. The Sheltowee Trace Outfitters located nearby offers whitewater rafting, canoeing and wall climbing.

HISTORY
Take a driving tour through Downtown Somerset, the Old Courthouse & various other buildings from the past still remain. The Harvey’s Hill area is regarded as one of the city’s most prestigious neighborhoods and its original architectural character has not been altered.

Civil War History buffs will want to take the Mill Springs Battlefield Driving Tour which begins at the 7-acre Mill Springs National Cemetery. The driving tour has stops at important battle sites and monuments, including Zollicoffer Park. We recommend that you start your tour at the Visitors Center & Museum located in Nancy. Here you can receive a driving tour guide as well as an overview of the Battlefield. The last two stops on the driving tour take you to Monticello to the Mill Springs Park and Mill. Mill Springs features the historic Brown-Lanier House as well as a restored working grist mill.

Near historic Stearns, KY visit the Big South Fork Scenic Railway where you can take a nostalgic 16 mile round trip train ride. The trip includes spectacular scenery as it descends into the gorge before stopping at the Blue Heron Coal Mining Camp, a NPS outdoor interpretive site. Another great stop in this area is the Barthell Coal Camp. Barthell was the first Coal Camp belonging to the Stearns Coal & Lumber Company.
