Tips for having a successful weekend on this well-rated Kentucky lake

D&M Fishing, Crappie USA Tournament Trail Team

As a team on the Crappie USA Tournament Trail, Todd Dalton and I have the opportunity to fish some of the best crappie lakes in the nation every year. But for both of us, there is nothing like coming home to Lake Cumberland. With excellent quality and quantities of both black and white crappie averaging in the .75 to 1-pound range, there is also the opportunity to catch fish well over the 2-pound mark. Lake Cumberland seldom disappoints when it comes to quality-sized crappie.

The 2017-18 Lake Cumberland official visitors guide is now available and will soon begin appearing in racks at rest areas along the Interstate 75 corridor.

Featuring the theme Lake Cumberland 365: Always in Season, the photograph-centric brochure focuses on the many events and attractions Somerset-Pulaski County has to offer year-round. The guide offers a complete listing of dining options, houseboat rentals, accommodations and campgrounds, while also featuring a fold-out map and a quick-reference stoplight guide for U.S. 27.

Rating its database of group lodging properties on six important categories — location and services, the group experience, price, sleeping and dining facilities, meeting rooms and event venues — selected Lee's Ford Resort & Marina in Nancy as one of 42 noteworthy locations across the United States for groups to consider during travel. The list was published in's fall 2016 magazine., a leading online resource for travel professionals booking groups in the United States, has selected the Master Musicians Festival in Somerset, KY, as one of 54 Famous American Festivals.

The website has developed a comprehensive database of more than 3,000 festivals across the country, and for this distinction, selected 54 that represented many different facets of American life.

MMF was one of two festivals in Kentucky highlighted in the website’s summer festival guide. The second was the Kentucky Derby Festival in Louisville.

“It is such an honor for our festival to be recognized for all the things that make it unique — our dedication to bringing diverse musical excellence to rural Kentucky, supporting local and regional artists, and honoring musicians who have devoted their lives to preserving musical heritage,” said MMF President Tiffany Bourne. “We hope people from across the nation will continue to visit Lake Cumberland, attend MMF and learn more about what makes our community such a special place.”

Now in its 24th year, Master Musicians Festival was named the Southeast Tourism Society's "Festival of the Year" for 2013 and has been featured in numerous publications and web reviews. MMF is held annually the second weekend in July at Somerset Community College’s Festival Field.

Somerset’s first craft brewery celebrated the beginning of American Craft Beer Week Sunday with the installation of tanks in its newly renovated facility on the town’s fountain square.

Jarfly Brewing owners and Somerset residents Daniel Stroud and Delaney Stephens, who have been working since fall 2015 to remodel the former Goldenberg Furniture building on West Mount Vernon Street, hope to open their brewery and taproom to the public by mid-summer. With tanks installed, they can soon begin brewing in the new location.
